Create Your First SVG in VectorCraft

GOAL Make a simple two-shape vector icon, save an editable VectorCraft copy, and export an SVG you can reopen.

01

Create a new document

Use File → New… and start with a blank artboard; a square is convenient for a basic icon.

CHECK YOUR RESULT

A blank artboard is visible and ready for drawing.

02

Draw your first shape

Use Rectangle or Ellipse and drag on the artboard. Select to move or resize it.

CHECK YOUR RESULT

The shape remains an editable vector object.

03

Add and arrange another shape

Draw a second shape with a different size and position it to form a simple symbol.

CHECK YOUR RESULT

You can select and move the two shapes separately.

04

Change fill and save

Change one shape's Fill. Use File → Save or Save As… to keep a .vectorcraft copy.

CHECK YOUR RESULT

The project is saved and individual shapes remain editable.

05

Export and check SVG

Use File → Export → Export As SVG…; reopen the saved SVG in a browser or viewer.

CHECK YOUR RESULT

The SVG displays the intended shapes and colors.

SVG and Illustrator File Support

SVG, native project files and Illustrator documents serve different purposes. Keep the original .ai file before testing compatibility.

File Type Quick Check

File typeWhat VectorCraft documentsWhat to check yourself
SVG / SVGZCan be opened and exportedText, paths, masks, gradients and sizing after reopen
.vectorcraftNative editable documentShapes and layers remain editable after save/reopen
Illustrator .aiPDF-compatible import/export, with limitsLayers, text and effects; do not assume full round trip
PDF / EPSDocumented import/export capabilitiesFonts, clipping, page dimensions and vector objects
PNG / JPEG / WebPRaster output for sharingPixel dimensions and whether a separate SVG is needed

Before editing an existing Illustrator or SVG file

  • Make a copy of the original.
  • Open the copy and inspect paths, text, layers, masks and gradients.
  • Save a separate editable .vectorcraft project.
  • Export and reopen the result, then compare with the source.

Important for Illustrator users: PDF-compatible .ai support does not guarantee native Illustrator editing data or exact layer fidelity. Verify copies before production handoff.
