Is ArtCraft Legal? What the Public Evidence Shows

Open-source licensing and a familiar interface do not establish that an entire project is lawful or unlawful. Public documents explain permissions and stated limits; they do not resolve every copyright, trademark or jurisdiction-specific question. This article is research, not legal advice.

Code licenses are permissions with conditions

The PhotoCraft repository offers its code under MIT or Apache-2.0, at the user’s choice. Read the actual terms before redistributing or modifying it, including notice requirements. This is evidence of the project’s published license, not an independent audit of every contribution. PhotoCraft MIT license ↗ · Apache-2.0 license ↗

Bundled assets can carry separate terms. The README directs readers to asset attribution records; do not assume a code license automatically licenses every font, logo, sample image or third-party dependency. PhotoCraft license and credits ↗

Names and logos have separate rules

The project states that ArtCraft’s name, wordmark and logos are excluded from the code license and subject to a separate brand license. That distinction matters when publishing a fork or using the logo in a product. Brand license ↗

PhotoCraft’s README identifies Adobe product names as Adobe trademarks and states that the project is independent and not endorsed by Adobe. This is the project’s own statement; it is not evidence of Adobe approval. Project statement ↗

A trademark identifies the source of goods or services. It is a different question from permission to reuse source code. USPTO trademark basics ↗

Familiar workflows and compatibility are not legal verdicts

The U.S. Copyright Office distinguishes protected expression, including software, from ideas, systems and methods of operation. Applying that distinction to a particular interface or implementation requires facts; visual similarity alone does not settle it. This U.S. guidance does not decide the position in other jurisdictions. Copyright Office explanation ↗

Being able to import a PSD describes a technical operation. It does not transfer rights in someone else’s photos, fonts, templates or client documents. Use files you are entitled to process and follow any applicable contract.

What this evidence cannot establish

The documents reviewed here do not establish an Adobe authorization, an Adobe response or a court ruling about ArtCraft. This guide makes no claim about the presence or absence of litigation. A statement that no lawsuit exists would require a separate, defined records search.

For an ordinary download, start with official releases and the security checks in Is ArtCraft Safe?. For a commercial redistribution or disputed use, preserve the exact version and license notices and obtain advice for that use and jurisdiction. About Brandon Thomas and ArtCraft →
